LHR works on a principle called “Selective Photothermolysis”

Stamping mode or Conventional tech: Milesman Diode 810nm, Hyperion Long Pulse Nd: YAG 1064nm, EXILITE IPL 640/690nm. (add video): works by The light energy for the laser torch enters the hair follicles through the skin which causes permanent damage due to a massive amount of heat to follicles to re-grow.

In-motion or Super Hair Removal Technology: Soprano-ICE Diode 810 & ALEX 755 (add video) works by: gradually heating the dermis to a temperature that effectively damages the hair follicles and prevents re-growth.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Precision: The laser light selectively damages the thick and stubborn hair while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.

Speed: Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat hundreds to thousands of hairs at the same time.

Predictability: Most patients have permanent reduction or of hair after an average of five to seven sessions.

Different lasers are effective for different hair and skin types:

Diode laser

Amongst the different lasers available, the diode laser is the time tested among the laser technology. There are many reasons for this, such as:

Diode laser projects light within the visible to the infrared range (810 nm) in order to target specific pigment (melanin) cells.

It works on both light and dark skin. However, it is more effective for darker, terminal hair than lighter, finer hair.

Compared to other lasers, its wavelength offers the deepest penetration and superior melanin absorption.

These unique characteristics make diode laser the most suitable technology for laser hair removal, allowing safe and effective treatment of all skin and hair types, for all body areas.

Diode laser hair removal is so popular because of its speed and efficacy. A single session rarely takes more than an hour. In fact, it an office-hour procedure, which means that it is quick & ensures a speedy recovery.

This procedure has been proven to achieve ‘permanent hair reduction’ in >90% of the cases.

It ensures a stable reduction, in hair re-growth after a prescribed treatment regime.

Long Pulse Nd Yag laser

The Nd: YAG long pulse laser can be used safely on all skin types – type I to VI. Most notably, it is highly effective on dark or tanned skin with darker hair but is of limited use on light or fine hair. Fast repetition rates and large coverage areas allow large areas of the body to be treated quickly. Nd: YAG technology can be used to eliminate unwanted hair on almost any part of the body.

Alexandrite Laser

The Alexandrite laser has a shorter wavelength than the Diode and Nd: YAG lasers, and has been used effectively for laser hair reduction treatment on skin types I-IV, meaning fair and light brown skin types. The shorter wavelength makes the treatment more effective on lighter skins, and finer hairs as they are more superficial and not suitable for darker skins.

Pre-Procedure:

Your doctor will discuss with you your detailed medical history, the risks and benefits of treatment, and your expectations from it beforehand.

Will shave the area you wish to get the procedure.

Don’t wax or use other hair removal methods like plucking or electrolysis anytime between the laser hair removal treatment sessions.

Stay away from the sun, tanning beds, spray tans, tanning lotion.

You may be advised not to have treatment if you are facing sunburn.

Don’t use scrubs, glycolic acid, and retinol creams for 1-3 days before treatment, and chemical peels 15days prior.

During The Procedure:

Test patch: it’s important to conduct a small test patch first to make sure that your skin is accepting of the treatment as pigment problems, discoloration, and scarring can occur in some skin types with cosmetic laser treatments.

Eye protection: Your doctor will provide eye protection to avoid the effects of radiation around the eyes.

Settings: The laser settings are adjusted for both your skin and hair color so that the wavelength of the light emitted from the laser beam matches that of the pigment in your hair.

Pain: The pain feels like someone is snapping you with a rubber band every time the laser fires. Most lasers also have a cooling mechanism to help with the pain.

After Procedure:

Some swelling or blistering may occur. Therefore, you can use an ice pack to help relieve it. It usually subsides within 2-3 days.

SPF 30 sunscreen post-treatment is a compulsion to prevent pigmentation issues.

Do not wax or pluck your hair even after the treatment, because pulling out hair follicles after laser hair removal hinders the process. However, you can shave the area if you want.

It is advisable to avoid perfumes and deodorants for 24-48 hours after treatment.

The heat generated from the laser stays in your skin for few hours, so don’t go to the gym or saunas in order to avoid creating a warm environment for the bacteria to breed in and give you spots.

Your physician may prescribe anti-inflammatory medication to relieve pain and swelling, and sometimes antibiotics to prevent infection.

A series of treatment sessions are necessarily required to ensure permanent hair reduction.

This is because hair grows in four stages: anagen (growing stage), telogen (transitional), catagen (resting stage), and early anagen (shedding).

Almost all hair removal lasers work only on actively growing hair that is in the anagen stage because this is when the hair contains abundant melanin, which is essential to absorb the radiation from the laser that can disable the follicle.

Thereby a series of treatments is necessary required to attack each of the hair follicles present on the treatment area during their growing stage.

In general, the majority of the individuals will need at least 6-8 sessions with hair removal laser. The duration between 2 sessions will be around 6-10 weeks apart. This will help achieve 80-90% hair reduction.

With subsequent sessions, you will witness fewer and fewer hair cropping back until you start experiencing smooth, hairless skin all year round. Even in cases where few hairs keep growing back, they are barely noticeable.

Results: If you are expecting good results, patience and regular follow-up are very important, you need to follow your sessions as advised by your doctor so that each hair follicle can be targeted in its active stage. Herewith advisable not to be lazy in scheduling and keeping up with your sessions. In most cases, 30-50% hair reduction is noticed at the 3 treatment and about 80-90% of hair re-growth reduction after 6-8 treatment sessions.

The procedure of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal uses light to target the pigment in individual hair follicles. The heat from the laser light destroys the hair follicle. As a result, hair does not grow from it.

Pre Procedure

If you are planning to undergo a laser hair removal procedure, then you should avoid the following:

· Plucking

· Waxing

· Electrolysis

· Sun exposure

· Avoiding blood-thinning medications

· Shaving is okay to do a day before laser treatment.

You should avoid other hair removal activities for at least 6 weeks before the treatment. As we know, the laser hair removal procedure targets the hair roots. However, even these activities remove the hair roots temporarily.

Procedure

· Prior to the procedure, your hair will be trimmed to a few millimeters above the skin surface.

· Then, a topical numbing medicine shall be applied at least 20- 30 minutes before the laser procedure.

· The dermatologist will adjust the laser equipment according to the color, thickness, and location of your hair and to treat as well as your skin color.

· You and your technician will even need to wear goggles for eye protection.

· You also have to apply a cold gel. In fact, this is to help the laser light penetrate the skin.

· Then, the technician will test a small area on the skin with a pulse of light. This to ensure that the settings are correct & optimum.

· Once the procedure is complete, you will need ice packs, anti-inflammatory creams or lotions, or cold water to ease any discomfort.

· Your next treatment session can be done four to six weeks later.

· Your treatment will continue until the hair stops growing.

Side Effects

·Blistering in darker complexions: Using a moisturizer or cooling gel right after the procedure can help manage these symptoms.

·Sunburned skin: Patients may feel a sensation similar to that of sunburned skin.

·Redness & irritation: Since the procedure damages hair follicles, the skin reacts by becoming red and getting irritated. However, this should reduce within a few hours after the procedure.

·Little swelling

·Scarring: Scars are nor a common side effect of this procedure. However, if the technician makes a mistake, scarring can occur. Hence, it is important to undergo this procedure with qualified practitioners. Scars may also form if people do not care for the treated area correctly afterward.

·Changes in skin color may occur as a temporary reaction after the procedure for some people. However, this reduces with time and the skin turns back to normal.

·Skin infection: Since the procedure damages the hair follicles, this can cause an infection risk. Hence, the treatment area should be taken care of to prevent any infection. Any unusual sensation or reaction should be reported to the dermatologist.

Post Procedure Care

· Avoid sun exposure for six weeks after the procedure. This is because sun exposure can make laser hair removal less effective.

· Cool compresses and moisturizers may help to control the sunburn.

· You can wear makeup the next day unless your face has blisters from the procedure.

· Wear sunscreen every time you go out. This will help prevent any temporary changes in the color of the treated skin.

Most people undergo several treatment sessions over a span of 2-3 months. Most people usually require anywhere between four to six sessions. In fact, every treatment will need a time gap of six weeks each. This means that the full treatment cycle can take up to nine months.

Additionally, for the best results, you’ll likely need occasional maintenance sessions. These help ensure that the hair follicles don’t regenerate. You will need a maintenance session once or twice a year after your first treatment. However, this will vary from person to person.

Remember, this is a cosmetic procedure that requires training to perform. You need to undergo this procedure from a well-reputed clinic that is capable of managing any potential risks. Hence, make sure to do a thorough check of the credentials of the doctor or technician and the clinic, before getting laser hair removal.
