Er:Yag laser is a solid-state laser with YAG crystal doped with erbium. Er:YAG Lasers emits light in the infrared range with a wavelength of 2940nm and its chromophore is water.This wavelength is closer to the peak spectrum of water and therefore has an absorption coefficient 12-16times higher than CO2 laser. Therefore, Er:YAG laser can (remove as little as 1 mm of skin with a single laser impact) cause precise ablation of the skin tissues with less damage to the surrounding tissue and has been used effectively with fever adverse effects and faster healing time.
The zone of Er:YAG laser thermal necrosis is usually less than 30 to 50 mm. 9–12 This is in contrast toan initial depth of CO2 laser-induced thermal injury of approximately 75 to 150 mm.
